From Barren Land to Productive Village, Koranji Subang Together Protects the Forest

Subang, October 2025 – Koranji Village in Subang Regency is now a clear example of how community-based reforestation can provide ecological benefits while opening up new economic opportunities. The community collaboration program with the LindungiHutan conservation platform has encouraged the planting of avocados and the rehabilitation of community forests, as well as transforming barren excavated land into productive green areas.

Detty Sumiyati, a forestry instructor who accompanies 23 sub-districts, including Purwodadi, revealed that community involvement in Koranji Village began in April 2023. “I initially got to know LindungiHutan through Mba Widya. They offer avocado planting packages that suit the residents’ needs. In this location, apart from rambutan plants whose economic value is decreasing, the residents also plant rice, but this package is suitable for their people’s forests so it has a double impact,” she said.

This planting activity not only fertilizes the land, but also sparks interest in the surrounding community. According to Detty, the Bima Tunas Sejahtera farmer group is a stimulant for other residents who are not yet involved. “People who initially did not participate, seeing the success of avocado planting, are now starting to plant their own trees. They realize that the Miki variety of avocado is more profitable than rambutan or butter,” he said. Although the current planting scale is still around 300–1,000 trees, this activity has encouraged local fruit trade to nearby wholesale markets, providing promising economic opportunities.

Apart from the economic impact, the Protect Forest program brings significant changes to the environment. Previously, the excavated land in Koranji was very barren, prone to landslides and flooding due to erosion. “Now, after planting acacias and avocados, this area is starting to become green again. We are also building a retaining dam to reduce erosion due to fast river flows,” explained Detty. Until early 2025, LindungiHutan has carried out four planting activities in Koranji Village, and expanded to the Karya Lestari and KTH Mulia Bakti farmer groups in Purwodadi sub-district.

The LindungiHutan approach which directly empowers the community also received appreciation. “What makes it different is that LindungiHutan really adapts the program to the needs of the community. From seeds to land processing, they involve local residents. My hope is that in the future LindungiHutan will not only plant trees, but also expand training programs, education and improve community human resources,” said Detty.

This program is a clear example that forest conservation is not only about planting trees, but also building communities that are environmentally conscious and economically productive. This collaboration emphasizes that empowering local communities is the key to the sustainability of any reforestation program.
