Nepal’s new parliament? It is in the dispute

The sound of the horn, mass screams, and tear gas. So initially the demonstration in Kathmandu when the Nepal government tried to block social media. But after the Prime Minister of KP Sharma Oli resigned, the political stage actually moved to a place that was completely unexpected: Dispute.

For many young people, Discord is identical to the gaming room – a place to confide in the Mobile Legends strategy or watch with virtual concerts. But in Nepal, this application level up: So the arena of national digital convention.

“I used to make a discord account just to play Valorant with friends,” said Anisha, 22 years old, student activist. “Now I use the voting of candidates for prime minister.”

Shortly after that, the Nepal military who held political control after its OLI actually entered this digital conversation. They asked the server manager to propose the name of the Prime Minister temporary.

Through discussions that took place for days (and thousands of political memes in the middle), the name that came out was Sushila KarkiFormer Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

“Voting in this discord feels like playing games, but the prize of the future of the country,” joked Kiran, 19 years old, the moderator of one of the channels.

Emoji democracy

Digital elections in the style of Discord are indeed not perfect. But he offers something different: speed, transparency, and sound of young people who are usually ignored. Emoji 👍 or 👎 can now be a symbol of political attitudes.

Observers said this step had never happened before. In the past there was Arab Spring via Twitter, Hong Kong with Telegram, now it’s Nepal’s turn to write a new chapter for digital democracy through Discord.
