One year the Ijen Express train carries 271 thousand passengers and is adaptive to customer needs


Jember, February 2026 – Even one year of operation since its initial launch on February 1 2025, the Ijen Express Train (KA) which serves the Ketapang–Malang (PP) route has recorded positive performance and high public response. During the operational period until January 31 2026, the Ijen Express Train has served a total of 271,714 passengers.

Of this total, 133,031 customers were recorded as departing from the Daop 9 Jember area, while 138,683 passengers were recorded as arriving at various stations in the Daop 9 Jember area. The average daily occupancy rate reached 76.3 percent, with On-Time Performance (OTP) maintained at 99.2 percent, reflecting the consistency of reliable and timely service.

This achievement confirms the position of the Ijen Express Train as one of the favorite modes of transportation for the people of East Java, especially for customers who prioritize comfort, punctuality and intercity accessibility.

As a response to the high level of public interest, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) made a series adjustment or standardization on June 10 2025. This strategic step was taken to optimize transport capacity without reducing customer comfort standards.

Previously, the Ijen Express train operated with 3 executive trains and 3 New Generation economy trains with a total capacity of 366 seats. After adjustments, the series became 2 executive trains and 4 New Generation economy trains, equipped with 1 restoration train and 1 generator train, so that capacity increased to 388 seats per trip.

KAI Daop 9 Jember Legal and Public Relations Manager, Cahyo Widiantoro, explained that this adjustment is a form of KAI’s commitment to providing services that are adaptive to customer needs.

“We continue to monitor trends and dynamics of community needs. The addition of New Generation economy trains was carried out to accommodate more passengers who want to enjoy modern facilities at prices that remain competitive. KAI is committed to continuing to innovate and improve service quality in all aspects,” said Cahyo.

Closing one year of the journey of the Ijen Express Train which was full of positive achievements, KAI also appealed to customers to always prioritize security and comfort in transactions. The public is asked to always pay attention to official information regarding travel schedules and train services, as well as order tickets through official channels such as the Access by KAI application, the kai.id site, or official KAI partners.

“We invite customers to continue to follow information through the company’s official communication channels to avoid inaccurate information while ensuring ease in planning trips,” concluded Cahyo.
