Do not panic! Bitcoin Correction During Chinese New Year Could Actually Be an Opportunity

Jakarta, February 2026 — The 2026 Chinese New Year period, which takes place from February 17 to early March, has once again attracted the attention of global crypto market players. Historically, this celebration is often followed by seasonal patterns in Bitcoin price movements, ranging from selling pressure before holidays to recovery after trading activity returns to normal.

A number of market research shows that in the period 2015–2023, Bitcoin is likely to experience an average correction of 10–20% in the two to three weeks before Chinese New Year. After the holiday period ends, prices often record a 15–35% rally in the following one to two weeks. In fact, 10x Research analysis notes that the strategy of buying Bitcoin three days before Chinese New Year and selling 10 days after yielded an average return (ROI) of 11% historically.

This phenomenon cannot be separated from the large participation of investors from China in the global crypto ecosystem. Despite restrictions from the local government, the number of crypto asset owners in China is estimated to reach 59.1 million people. As Chinese New Year approaches, some investors are said to be liquidating to meet seasonal needs such as homecoming trips, distribution of red packets (hongbao), and family and business expenses.

Concentrated selling pressure over a short period of time creates a relatively consistent correction pattern. In addition, during the eight-day holiday period, trading activity from the Asian region tends to decline significantly. This decrease in transaction volume causes market liquidity to thin and the order book to become thinner, so that price movements are more easily driven by relatively small transactions.

Pressure Selling Get Attention

Historical data for 2024 shows a similar pattern. In January 2024, Bitcoin reached the level of US$48,494 before being corrected to around US$38,678, or down almost 20% ahead of the Chinese New Year. However, after the holiday period, prices reversed upwards and briefly touched US$56,650 at the end of February, reflecting a recovery of more than 30% from the pre-festive point.

Tokocrypto CEO, Calvin Kizana, believes that seasonal factors such as Chinese New Year often put short-term pressure on the market, but are not the only variable determining price direction.

“Periods like Chinese New Year often present volatility due to regional liquidity factors and investors’ seasonal needs. However, investors need to see it in a broader context, including global sentiment and institutional fund flows,” said Calvin.

According to him, the current crypto market structure is much more mature than a few years ago. “Currently, the flow of funds is no longer concentrated in one region. The participation of global institutions makes the market more diversified, so that potential pressure from one region can be more reduced than before,” he added.

However, Calvin believes that investors still need to be aware of the potential for short-term volatility during the long holiday period. He suggested that market players pay attention to risk management and not overreact to seasonal price movements.

Apart from the Chinese New Year factor, the global crypto market is also still shadowed by macroeconomic dynamics, starting from the interest rate policies of major central banks to regulatory developments in various countries. This combination of seasonal factors and global sentiment has made Bitcoin price movements in recent times look fluctuating.
