Joint Working Meeting with Commission V DPR RI, Minister of Public Works Explains Progress on Disaster Management in Sumatra


JAKARTA, January 2026 – Minister of Public Works (PU), Dody Hanggodo, attended the Working Meeting (Raker) with Commission V DPR RI in Jakarta, Tuesday (27/1/2026). During the meeting, Minister Dody reported on developments in post-disaster management that hit the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra. The Ministry of Public Works ensures that handling steps are carried out in an integrated manner across sectors by Highways, Water Resources, Cipta Karya and Strategic Infrastructure to restore basic infrastructure and community activities.

In the working meeting, Minister Dody said that the government had moved quickly to respond to the disaster. The Ministry of Public Works deployed more than 1,377 internal personnel, including 402 Young Generation PU, and received direct support from 1,366 TNI personnel and the community.

In the field, the Ministry of Public Works also mobilized 1,937 heavy equipment, 500 units of supporting infrastructure and 6,352 materials to speed up recovery in the three affected provinces.

“Since December 12 2025, we have also launched a labor-intensive program involving more than 30,100 local workers, thereby helping to stimulate the economy of the local community,” said Minister Dody.

Based on recapitulation data as of January 27 2026, handling in the Highways sector has shown positive results. A total of 99 national roads and 33 national bridges affected by the disaster have been successfully restored and are functional. All connectivity infrastructure is recorded as having reached 100 percent functional condition as of December 30 2025. This condition is an important milestone for ensuring logistics distribution routes to affected areas.

In the Water Resources (SDA) sector, handling is focused on 31 irrigation areas under central authority and 7 irrigation areas under regional authority. Currently, the progress of irrigation rehabilitation has reached 23 percent. In this sector, the Ministry of Public Works coordinates with the Ministry of Agriculture to prioritize irrigation networks that irrigate rice fields that have entered the planting period.

For river handling, the main focus is normalizing and securing the channel from subsequent floods. Of the 77 national rivers affected, physical progress has reached 52 percent with a completion target in October 2026. This handling plan also includes the construction of sediment controls such as Sabo Dam And check dam.

“We have identified that if the rain is still very heavy in the upstream areas, whether in Aceh, North Sumatra or West Sumatra then the sediment, carrying sand and wood is still very likely to fall into the downstream areas. So we are proposing the construction of several Sabo Dam And check dam “We are targeting completion by October 2028,” explained Minister Dody.

Meanwhile, dIn the field of Cipta Karya, the main priority is the restoration of basic services. Of the 176 Drinking Water Supply Systems (SPAM) affected, around 70 percent have been successfully restored and are targeted to be fully functional by February 15 2026. Meanwhile, handling of the sanitation sector, including Fecal Sludge Treatment Plants (IPLT) and Waste Final Processing Sites (TPA), has reached 83 percent with a completion target on the same date.

As additional support for clean water, the Ministry of Public Works is also building new drilled wells. The progress of making deep drilled wells has reached 15 percent, while shallow drilled wells have reached 53 percent. All drilled wells are targeted to be completed before the month of Ramadan to support SPAM operations and residents’ needs.

In the Strategic Infrastructure Sector, mud cleaning in public facilities was carried out in 171 locations, of which 120 locations have returned to functionality. Construction of 1,217 temporary housing units (huntara) continues, along with the preparation of emergency health centers which are targeted to be functional before February 15 2026.

Closing his report, Minister Dody emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining the quality of post-disaster infrastructure. “We continue to oversee this recovery so that it is not only fast, but also of high quality and sustainable, so that the rebuilt infrastructure is more resilient and able to support the community’s economic recovery,” said Minister Dody.
